Luke Littler meets Man Utd flop after darts sensation, 16, wins again at Ally Pally

Publish date: 2024-08-23

Darts sensation Luke Littler hung out with a Manchester United flop after creating more Ally Pally history.

The 16-year-old has taken the Paddy Power World Championship by storm and he wowed darts fans again with a sensational performance to destroy Matt Campbell 4-1. As a result, he became the youngest player ever to reach the fourth round.

Littler, who won the World Youth Championship in November, will pocket a guaranteed £35,000, but will have his sights on lifting the Sid Waddell Trophy in what would be one of the greatest ever sporting stories. His exploits mean he is now a player in demand from media and fellow sporting stars.

Plenty of footballers are darts fans, including Red Devils flop Donny van de Beek, who was at Ally Pally for Littler’s clash with Campbell, as well as Michael van Gerwen's third round match.

The Dutch midfielder, who was granted backstage access, had his picture taken with Littler, who shared it on Instagram with the word “legend”. That term would be more fitting to Littler as there has been nothing legendary about Van de Beek's spell at Old Trafford, which looks to be coming to an end.

Eintracht Frankfurt are on the verge of signing Van De Beek on loan, with the Dutchman already undergoing a medical in Germany. Van de Beek will reportedly join the Bundesliga side on loan with an option to buy for €11m (£9.5m), plus €4m (£3.45m) in add-ons.

Given United’s injury problems, there were suggestions that Van de Beek could remain part of Erik ten Hag’s squad until the move goes through in January. However, the home defeat to Crystal Palace in September remains his last appearance in a United shirt.

Van de Beek's inactivity will at least give him plenty of time to watch the darts, with Littler facing Dutch icon Raymond van Barneveld or Jim Williams in the fourth round.
