Football teams who faced each other in England's top tier clash in ninth division
Over a century on from facing off against each other in the top flight, Bury FC and Glossop North End have played each other once again, this time all the way down in the ninth tier of English football.
The two sides are currently part of the 24 teams playing in the North West Counties League, and faced off this weekend at Bury's Gigg Lane. And for Bury, the clash against Glossop was a massive one too.
The North West Counties clash marks the first time in 1,547 days since Bury's last competitive game at Gigg Lane. Back in May 2019, the Shakers drew 1-1 with Port Vale, a result that secured them promotion to League One.
But, financial issues saw the EFL expel Bury from the Football League entirely come August, leaving fans shell shocked and furious with then owner Steve Dale, who bought the club for £1 back in 2018.

However, following years of turmoil and tireless efforts from supporters, Bury will be seeking to climb the divisions as fast as possible in order to return to where they were just a few years ago.
Conversely, Gossop were relegated last term from Step 4 of the English football pyramid, having finished 18th in the Northern Premier League One West. They will take on a Bury side at Gigg Lane this weekend who have faced off against Football League opposition in the form of Championship side Preston North End and League Two's Bradford City, who are managed by Mark Hughes.
